Fantastic experience: My wife and I attended Sandygate Dental Practice today. We had a very warm greeting by Lottie, the Receptionist, who is extremely efficient and helpful. The new reception area is beautifully done and very comfortable. Our dentist, Dr Emily Denby, was excellent. She has a very friendly and approachable manner, whilst being extremely professional. All in all, we cannot recommend this Dental Practice highly enough.

Negative experience: I had been going for a number of years. I then received a letter to indicate that they could not make NHS funding work. My young children were removed from their NHS list, unless we agreed to pay privately for the adults. Shortly thereafter, they invested in a new shop front. I take the view that running a local business comes with responsibility. It is hard to defend removing children from the NHS list, despite keeping others and upgrading the shop front. The service differs from opticians, for example, who look after young children and make the NHS funding work.
I apologise for the delayed reply to your 1 star review, and I feel saddened that you felt so strongly to leave a negative review rather than speak to us directly.
I am replying to you as the business owner, and want to explain why I have taken your review personally, and what responsibility means for a private business owner who owns a dental practice. I would like to address all of your concerns here.
Since buying Sandygate in 2009 we have worked tirelessly to make the NHS contract work for the people we serve. To the extent that we have had multiple high level meetings with the regional NHS dental teams on multiple occasions, with little effect and suffered years of underfunding as a result.
When we bought the practice, we inherited an NHS contract. However, once the recession hit and then the effects of Brexit, our contract income did not cover our outgoings.
The difficulty with understanding how the NHS funds dentistry stems from the fact that all dental contracts are on different pay scales, with the lowest and highest differing greatly. However all practices have to comply with the same rules and regulations, pay similar wages and undertake the same treatments. Sandygate's contract was valued as one of the lowest, a value made before we owned the Practice.
You mention opticians as a comparison. Our funding and the work we do is very different to other community NHS services and cannot be compared, however I would be more than willing to explain the costs of running a Practice, if you would like to arrange a visit.
In 2019, with the fear of forced closure due to our loss-making NHS contact, we made the very difficult decision to privatise some of our lists to save the business and continue to offer care to those patients who valued the service they get from us. We also hoped that the NHS funding would improve.
Unfortunately, Covid happened and the dental crisis deepened, resulting in more dentists struggling to recover and struggling to cover their overheads, and many have chosen to leave the NHS. As a result, there are now huge areas of the UK where there are no NHS dentists, with parts of Lincolnshire and North Yorkshire as examples. This devastating outcome is regularly reported in the national papers. Practices with much better contracts than ours, are now finding it difficult to make ends meet and run a sustainable business.
In relation to not seeing children and prioritising our front window, the local NHS are not able to prioritise children over anyone else’s care, and due to the costs of running a surgery, we cannot see patients without remuneration. The shop room had stood empty for 2 years with whitewashed, rotten wooden windows that looked awful. We knew we had a responsibility to the community of Crosspool and the safety of our building and therefore decided to renovate the front of the building. The financing of this has nothing to do with the NHS and is at a financial risk to me and John personally. You may not agree, but we have had nothing but kind words with the outcome and what we have achieved, and I personally feel proud with what we have achieved and the positive impact it has had on our local area.
I hope you and your family find a dentist that meets your needs, however, as recently reported by the British Dental Association, with the average dentist now loosing £7.69 for every new NHS patient they see, finding one may be challenging.

Fantastic experience: Excellent practice, Dr Alesbook is a very kind and patient dentist, I have a lifelong fear of the dentist that is quite extreme. He has taken time to make me feel less scared and carefully explains every step. All the staff are kind and courteous. I would highly recommend this practice to anyone. I've been with the practice now over a decade, Dr Alesbrook has been absolutely fantastic with my Autistic child, seeing him from being young right up to him leaving school. He's very good at explaining to my child what's happening, importantly he always explains when and why he's going to touch my sons mouth. We've never had any sort of meltdown in the surgery due to Dr Alesbrooks diligence and understanding of neuro diverse needs.

Fantastic experience: I saw my lovely dentist, Dr John Alesbrook today for my first appointment. He was so kind and caring and really listened to everything (and I mean everything!) I was worried about and wanting to change with my teeth. He took time and care to really put me at ease and talk through everything I wanted to, nothing was too much trouble. He spent time checking over all of my teeth, my mouth, gums, lymph nodes, tongue, thyroid, etc. He x-rayed my teeth and came up with a great plan of action. He spent time talking through my options and is setting up an orthodontist referral too. From the moment I first enquired about joining the surgery, everyone has been so kind. Melissa took the time to listen to my many questions when first enquiring and she knew that Dr Alesbrook would be the best dentist for me. She was so helpful and kind and set up the appointment for me with an after school appointment which is unheard of! When I arrived for my appointment today, Loti was so kind and caring and went through the forms with me and offered me a drink. She also discussed the plan with me and gave me lots of information to take home. Lawza was also very kind and helpful and took me up to my appointment and back down when I had finished. She went through my notes with me and from start to finish, I was thoroughly impressed by just how lovely and genuine everyone has been. 100% would recommended to everyone! Highly professional, incredibly kind and extremely helpful.

Negative experience: This dentist brothers and sisters!! So I went in for a appointment and they act nice to you at the start then say can you do a google review, that's why there's so many good reviews because your waiting for a long time and they pressure you Then when the dentist and the nurses call your name, they checked my teeth and I only needed a filling and they said I need all kinds and it all come to £2350 etc. I only asked for a filling!! whoever reads this, avoid avoid avoid, either go turkey which is a lot cheaper or go to a different dentist jazakallah khairun Salam aleykum

In response to your comment, we are a professional and compassionate practice, who assess patients’ oral health based on their clinical need and aesthetic desires. We are honest about our assessment and any recommendations for treatment. We discuss the risks and benefits and any associated costs. We only recommend treatment options that are ethical, clinically needed and that will last.
We do not pressurise anyone for reviews. Genuine patients kindly leave reviews based on their actual experience with us, I'm not sure it is possible to pressurise anyone to leave a lovely review!
Finally, we are as far removed from being a Turkey Teeth dentist as you can get and would certainly not recommend this option.

Fantastic experience: Received an early appointment in response to displaced crown. Options were explained to me and on advice the crown was recemented in. As I was imminently due an inspection this was carried out at the same time together with a clean and polish. Faultless service throughout by all concerned.

Fantastic experience: Having had traumatic experiences with butcher-dentist in the past, there is nothing worse for me than a visit to the dentist, seriously. The consequences of my past experiences stick with me to this day, but Dr. John Alesbrook is so patient with me, always tries to calm me down, never rushes me and always explains what he will do. He treats me like I was a child, but that is exactly what a very anxious patient needs. And most importantly - he doesn't start doing anything in your mouth before the anesthesia takes effect! The last tooth extraction, despite my great fear, was quick, efficient and painless. And even Maya held my hand at the worst moment, when I heard the cracking of a tooth being extracted - it was not only cute but very helpful for a super stressed patient.

Fantastic experience: As someone who hasn't bad the best experience with dentists in the past, all of the staff here have been very friendly and approachable, while providing a great service. My teeth have never been in better condition than since I attended my first appointments here and followed their advice. They're happy to take their time if you need it, keep checking in on your throughout and encourage you to ask questions. Visiting a dentist no longer need to be an anxious event!

Fantastic experience: John and the team are absolutely fantastic, after suffering alot of issues with a nhs dentist I decided to take the leap to move to private dental care. Fantastic experience: I’ve had the best experience at Sandygate dental. I’m a really nervous patient which resulted in me needing a lot of treatment. All of the team have been so kind, caring and patient. Dr Emily and Dr Aminas treatment plan meant that I felt so confident on my wedding day and I’m so happy with my teeth now. Positive experience: Broke one of my molar teeth recently, tooth was repaired with a filling which unfortunately did not want to stay put in my mouth and three weeks later I had to book another emergency appointment as the tooth had shattered in exactly the same position as it had previously. Contacted the practice via email as I was out of the country at the time/flying and they booked an emergency appointment on my behalf for three days later. A cancellation meant that the appointment was able to be brought forward by two days. Tooth promptly repaired again and I was not charged for this emergency appointment/dental work as it had been under guarantee from my previous emergency dental appointment and dental work. Frustrating that I had to return to the dentist so soon due to the repair work initially failing, but the team worked very efficiently and quickly to resolve the issue. I have been attending this dentist for approximately a year now, prices are reasonable, staff friendly and professional and I've not had any other issues, barring the automatic check-in machine at the reception sometimes telling me to go to the wrong room.

Fantastic experience: I’m leaving A NEW review 3.10.23 ….see below original one ! …. Went for a pre booked checkup today, saw Dr Aaminah Akhtar. It’s the first time I have met her/ seen her for an appointment. Both Dr Akhtar and her dental nurse were absolutely lovely. Very warm and friendly. They both did a splendid job on my teeth I was extremely happy ! Dr Akhtar went through everything with me explained things really well. She was very thorough and didn’t rush . I felt totally at ease with both ladies. I have been with sandygate dental practice for some time now and over that time both myself and my family have seen a few different dentists each and everyone has been lovely. I left today feeling very happy with the service both myself and my partner had received. On that basis I would continue to highly recommend sandygate dental practice. I don’t think you should ever underestimate the job the person who’s on reception does …(.and not just the huge responsibility of the admin side of things ) But they are usually the first person you see on arrival , and if they are warm and friendly and welcoming it makes an enormous difference…. So THANK-YOU Loti for always brightening my day with your cheeriness ! ….. On this occasion we both saw Emily and Emma again both super friendly and welcoming although we had never met them before we both said after we felt immediately at ease with them both … Emily explained everything thoroughly and professionally, but at same time asking me my thoughts and feelings and she gave me time to talk through them with her. I didn’t feel rushed or pressured. They were both fab! Thank you to them both! I would highly recommend Sandygate dental, everyone is super friendly and we are very happy with the quality and service we receive from them all. Fantastic experience: I've been a member of the practise for only a few years since the pandemic, but I've felt incredibly fortunate to find such a great dentist! I initially saw some of the private dentists for an emergency matter and found they were incredibly reassuring during a very stressful time (tooth problems in the pandemic are awful!) and lead me to choose the best treatment option for my situation which I'm very happy with. I currently see Chris, who is a fantastic dentist. He's really thorough with his care but appointments don't drag or feel rushed. He has a lovely bedside manner, I always appreciate him asking about the rest of my day at every appointment. He's great at explaining what he's doing, why he's doing it and what sensations to expect so nothing comes as a shock. I always ask a lot of questions during my appointments which Chris always answers and never makes me feel as though I'm taking up his time. I can't recommend this dentist practise enough!

Negative experience: Money making exercise. Won't be visiting this place again! I'm keeping my anonymity. Band 1 costs £25.80. This is what you should get if you're an NHS patient: Examination Diagnosis, advice and X-rays Scale and polish* Fluoride varnish & fissure sealant Further treatment planning *Only available if clinically necessary Scale and polish is rarely offered regardless of whether you really need it. Never have been offered Fissure Sealant or Fluoride Polish . This is due to the fact that they are efficient treatments that will prevent you from needing any fillings or extractions—the dentist's "bread and butter." As a result, they never offer it because it doesn't bring in money for the dentist. I found John Alebrook provided a very pitiful level of service over the years and did the bare minimum. NHS patients who work already make NI contributions toward their dental care because it is deducted directly from their pay. They have no choice but to pay NI contributions. It is common knowledge that very few dental practices are taking on NHS patients because it is not profitable enough for them. Therefore, a blanket email was sent to patients from this dental practice, urging them to sign up for a payment plan in order to remain on their books. This was a plan to get as many people as possible to pay even more for their treatment. If you work, you would pay twice as much as you already do through NI contributions. I've gone elsewhere because its unethical, taking advantage of hard working people. The level of service is shoddy, lousy and pathetic. There are plenty of other dental practices out there that respect their patients and this 'aint one of them! Avoid at all costs.
We are sorry that you feel unhappy with your experience at Sandygate Dental Practice. We would like to address your questions and concerns and would advise you to contact us directly. We would however like to address your concerns here as well.
We carry out all NHS appointments using the guidance provided by NHS England and perform all necessary procedures on patients, depending on their individual needs and risk factors, including cleaning, fissure sealant and fluoride varnish. We take patient care very seriously and practice preventative dentistry.
There is an ongoing crisis in NHS dentistry, including in the recruitment of NHS dentists. We have needed to reduce our NHS commitment due to the national recruitment issue and currently do not have the NHS capacity we used to at this current time. We have written to a number of our patients to advise of their options for their ongoing dental care, including options to stay with our practice. We would encourage any patient that wishes to do so to use the NHS Choices website to search for other NHS dentists that are suitable for them.
To discuss your complaint in proper detail we would encourage you to contact us directly so that we can follow our complaint procedures. We take all feedback seriously and would like to discuss your questions with you.
Negative experience: I'd give it ZERO stars. Its an absolute shambles! Words cannot adequately describe the abysmal experience I had at this dental practice. From the moment I walked through the door, I was greeted by the most rude and unprofessional receptionist I have ever encountered in my life. If you have any ounce of self-respect, spare yourself the agony and avoid this place like the plague. The receptionist, whose name I wish I could forget, had the audacity to treat patients with contempt and disdain. She was dismissive, impolite, and seemed to take pleasure in belittling those who sought help. It was as if she considered herself superior to everyone else, looking down upon patients with a sneer. This level of unprofessionalism is absolutely unacceptable and reflects poorly on the entire dental practice. It was abundantly clear that patient comfort and well-being were the least of their concerns. As for the dentist, their competence was questionable at best. They appeared rushed and disorganised, barely taking the time to explain the procedures or answer my questions. It felt like I was just another name on their assembly line, and any concerns I raised were brushed off with a careless attitude. It was evident that this dentist prioritised profits over providing quality care to their patients. Furthermore, it was clear that this practice lacked the necessary attention to detail and precision. They seemed more interested in rushing through appointments to squeeze in as many patients as possible, rather than delivering proper, comprehensive care. Another indication that this dental practice prioritised money-making tactics over fair and transparent dealings with their patients. In conclusion, this dental practice is an absolute disgrace. The unprofessional and rude receptionist, combined with the overall lack of care and quality treatment, makes it an environment to be avoided at all costs. Do yourself a favour and seek dental care elsewhere, where you will be treated with the respect and professionalism that every patient deserves.
I am sorry to read about your less than happy experience . We take all complaints very seriously, and would request that you address your concerns directly with the Practice where we can follow our complaints procedure. I am however I currently am unable to assess what went wrong as I cannot locate you as someone we have seen.

Fantastic experience: I had a periodontal clean and general check up. As a nervous patient I was concerned about the procedure. The team were fantastic, made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. The clean was done with perfection, I cannot believe the difference it has made, even in the first few hours. I was offered a numbing agent that made things so much easier for me. I could have fallen asleep. Thoroughly recommend this practice, great staff, lovely surroundings and very reasonable prices. Cheers everyone!
