North Street Dental Practice

Negative experience: I have been a patient at North Street for many years and the care has always been quite acceptable, even if the ethos seems to have changed to being rather more money focussed since it was taken over a few years ago. I phoned up today to try and get an emergency appointment because I have a painful infected tooth. I was told I could not have an emergency appointment because I had not attended the practise for 15 months (which was when I completed some treatment that cost me over £2000). It appears that if you do not have your annual check up you are downgraded to only being able to get a routine appointment. I was offered one for next week despite them being told I was in a significant amount of pain. This is not the service I would expect from a professional dental practice and I think borders on unethical. Suffice to say I have moved to a new dentist who was recommended to me and managed to squeeze me in on the day and prescribed the antibiotics I needed.

Fantastic experience: I’ve been with Hilary for quite a few years now. She’s always been very friendly and always explains things in great detail. She is a very good hygienist and genuinely cares for her patients teeth and wellbeing.

Negative experience: I’m a humanitarian worker who has been to this clinic before, and I’m genuinely shocked by how unprofessional and inconsiderate they’ve become toward patient care. I’ll only be home for two weeks over Christmas, yet they refuse to schedule an appointment in advance so that I can actually receive treatment. They demand £100 upfront just for X-rays — which I’m perfectly willing to pay — but refuse to book more than a single 20 minute slot. Realistically, that means I’d end up paying the fee only to discover there’s no time available to actually get my teeth cleaned or have my filling repaired before I have to return to work in a conflict zone. This kind of rigid, profit-driven policy shows zero flexibility or compassion for patients who have limited time or unique circumstances. It’s disappointing to see a clinic put bureaucracy and money before basic care and respect for their clients. Terrible service and a deeply unprofessional approach to patient care.

Fantastic experience: My dentist at this practise is Gary Burgess. i can only recommend him as his treatment is always excellent. My last filling which was a front tooth, i had broken out a bit on a fall when i was very young. Gary had to replace that filling. he has done such an excellent job, that you can't see the filling, it has become just part f my tooth.

Negative experience: I’ve been a patient at this dental practice for nearly my whole life, but after recent events, I’m feeling incredibly let down. Due to sickness and Covid, I was removed from the NHS list and assigned to a new dentist, Dr. Anwar UL Haq. During my check-up, he briefly checked my teeth, told me there were no issues, and took an X-ray of my wisdom teeth. I was charged over £100 for this appointment, which was a significant amount for me as a student, but I assumed it was for a thorough and professional service. However, just a couple of weeks later, when I visited the hygienist, she pointed out a clear cavity on my left molar—something Dr. Haq had completely missed. It was incredibly obvious, and to have paid such a high fee for a check-up and still miss something like this feels like poor negligence. I’m really disappointed and upset by the service, especially after being taken off NHS care. To be charged so much for such a lack of attention to detail is not acceptable.

Negative experience: Deactivates your account if you don't go every 6 months (or so) and asks you to find another dentist. Could not reactivate.

And the dentist, Charlie in my case, is always so professional and kind, listening to any questions and gives advice. Best practice in Lewes by far, I have tried two others.

Negative experience: Never got in touch with me about changes to my dentist and becoming a private dental practice, travelled all the way to an appt after speaking to them on the phone and was only told in person instead of saving me a journey, disappointed with the communication

Fantastic experience: I have been coming to North Street Dental for many years now and all my family are enrolled here also. The practice is wonderful, the reception staff always helpful and friendly, and they keep a nice selection of books for the kids to enjoy while we wait. We never have to wait long and appointments are always kept to time, but I never feel we are being rushed. It is very clear that our dentist remembers us and cares about our general health and gives good timely advice on oral health and upkeep. The facilities are all top notch.

Ladies on reception knew who I was even though I've only been twice before, how could they possibly remember my face with the hundreds they see every week, but made me feel so welcome And the treatment was done quickly with no discomfort, didn't even feel the needle for numbing going in! Positive experience: I was a NHS patient here for about five years until I was told I had to go private. I attended my checkup and they explained it's just too much hassle handling NHS patients nowadays. I'm not entirely sure why this didn't apply to the elderly gentlemen who saw the exact same dentist just before me. He actually asked about the private fee situation and they explained it didn't apply to him. I can understand the pressures that dentists face but I felt like the staff were dishonest when explaining the situation to me. They're good but incredibly expensive compared to other dentists in the area. £85 for a checkup vs £52 at Lewes High Street dentist. Most of their prices are inflated in this manner. Unless you somehow manage to get a NHS slot, I recommend going elsewhere in Lewes.
