Established in 1994, Edinburgh Dental Specialists is a multidisciplinary specialist referral centre located in the heart of Scotland's historic capital. The majority of our patients are referred to us by their trusted family dentist or doctor, in the same way that GPs refer patients to hospital when they require specialist medical or surgical treatment. We offer a range of specialist dental services, including endodontics, orthodontics, teeth whitening, and dental implants. Negative experience: At one point in its history, this practice was excellent. It was sold to a commercial firm, which appears to have its main objective of making as much money as possible. Even my own dentist doesn’t feel this practice is ethical. Please be very careful of their excessive charges. Their initial examinations at an extortionate cost usually result in treatment plans which may have more to do with the income they earn and the profits they make than cost effective treatment. It may even be that the dentists earn bonuses on the basis of what they can sell. I now question the ethics of this practice. I’ve seen excellent reviews, but I remain suspiciousand I suggest you be cautious about the advice you are given. Of course, everyone there is very nice and helpful, and want to make you feel comfortable. As I said, be warned. I’m sure that the dentists are extremely experienced. It is a pity that dentistry has become such a large profitable industry, which many unsuspecting people are paying fortunes to line the pockets of the greedy. Just my view!

Fantastic experience: I had been putting off the repair to an old injury for YEARS. I was scared of every aspect of the treatment I was going to undergo. Finally plucked up the courage to see a dentist and was referred to Chris Mullen at Edinburgh Dental Specialists. On my first visit I also met Bev who works with Chris, what a great team they are. I felt like I was in such safe hands. The process took around 18 months from start to finish and I couldn’t be any happier with my experience. Fantastic experience: I have been here for dental treatment this week, being referred by my usual (NHS) dentist as they couldn't complete a wisdom tooth extraction, the roots still needing removed. First of all I will say that I was quoted x amount for this treatment, but due to the procedure proving less intensive than expected, I was charged half price. This shows the practice, while being private, is very fair on pricing. Everyone here is also very nice and personable and one feels very well looked after. From the dentist Mr Martin Paley, the quality of work from whom is superb from what I've seen, to Chelsea and Jade the dental nurses who are very warm and caring, to the receptionists.

Negative experience: Poor experience of being referred to this clinic. The basics of admin were a hassle, getting someone to pick up the phone, promises of returned calls not returned. Every call starts with 'what is your date of birth' - talk about feeling like a number not a person. This didn't stop them having multiple records for me resulting in them chasing me for an appointment I did not book. I bet they would look to charge me had I not called them to resolve. There are other options in Edinburgh, I would use them.

Fantastic experience: I would highly recommend the experts at Edinburgh Dental Specialists. I was referred to Dr Chris Millen for extensive restoration work. After my initial consultation I received a detailed document with a thorough review, diagnosis and treatment plan. The amount of work involved was alarming at first (nearly all my teeth needed work including some surgery) but after further discussion it was very clear how my treatment would proceed and I was given a lot of options. All risks and potential side effects were explained to me and I knew I could make informed decisions and ask if I had any questions or worries. There were 8 appointments over 6 months, 2 of which took 4 hours. During these long sessions I could signal for a break at any time. I felt it was a very hygienic and relaxing environment. I was able to select streaming programmes on a ceiling mounted monitor and request my choice of music. I got to know Chris and Bev well, they are very friendly and compassionate. Extremely professional and attentive to their patient, I had complete trust in them. Looking at the catalogue of photographs taken before and after, I cannot believe the difference. The team have done an amazing job.

I came based on the recommendation of both my dentist and a current patient at the practice. For me, this has led to over 2 years of premium care at this practice with Dr Brincat (the surgeon) and Rhiannon (the hygienist). Kind in their approach, nothing is too much trouble. This is so important to me and keeps me coming back. Great value for money, and in depth and accessible an explanation and clarity in bringing patients alongside in managing their own care. Coherent and joined up approach to centralised, thorough and efficient information and data sharing between practitioners. Thorough in treatment planning, explanation and delivery. Understanding, supportive and accepting that life gets in the way sometimes and a real emphasis what cleaning regimes on what's possible for patients to maintain. Tireless patience, good humour and clarity in explaining again and again, where necessary. So I always free to ask a question and say when I don't understand. They think of everything, complimentary hot drinks while waiting. And, get this, during treatment, you get to watch relaxing films of penguins on the ceiling. Negative experience: I was referred to this specialist from my local dentist to check toothache as they couldn't clearly identify the cause. This specialist conducted and xray however could not gurantee any resolution after being unable to identify the cause of the pain. However, they were happy to charge £1200 for further investigation! I travelled to Poland to see a specialist for £150 who immediately identified a sizeable cyst under my tooth which resulted in the tooth being removed immediately. I really can not recommend this specialist as they would have been happy to charge £1200 just to check my tooth which would have ended up being removed anyway!

During your initial assessment in November 2023, your teeth were thoroughly examined. At that time, extraction or root canal treatment were presented as options due to the condition of your tooth. It's important to note that cysts can sometimes develop after an assessment, particularly when an ongoing infection is present, which may not have been fully visible during the initial visit and it was only discovered months after.

Fantastic experience: I had a very informative session with Elaine (Dental Specialist). She was very thorough and explained to me how to clean around my dental implants in order to minimise any bone loss. Elaine showed me different tools to be used and explained the pros and cons of everyone, she chose the right ones for me. I was impressed that she measured the gaps in between my teeth and gave me the right sizes of dental flosses for each gap accordingly. Elaine prepared a drawing for my jaws and marked the gaps in different colours so that I can find it easy to remember, which colour of floss to be used. Elaine works with passion and I extremely benefited from my session today. I highly recommend visiting Elaine and learning from her how to protect your teeth.

Fantastic experience: From the moment I arrived, I was greeted in a lovely friendly manner. Kate, the assistant to the surgeon was kind and thoughtful ( I was having two teeth out and was feeling apprehensive). Dr Lello was the same and explained everything to me. What she didn't say was that she would administer the injections in such a way that it was painless. The subsequent extractions went without a problem. I didn't even know when the teeth had come out! No pain at all!!! And two days on, I can honestly say that I have had no pain. Area just a little tender. No need for pain relief. It's amazing, remarkable and I'm relieved that's it's over, but sorry that I was so worried when I needn't have been. Truly expects in their field.

Positive experience: I have used their service between March 2023 and January 2024 in a procedure, which included multiple steps. Both dentists I have dealt with (Gillian A. and Ahmed M.) were extremely professional and very friendly. I am every time totally nervous in a dentist room, but it was not a case here. Both dentists were able to explain what the whole procedure will comprise of (but they didn't go into too much details after I asked them not to do so), and they were really trying to put me at ease in each and every visit. Their communication was 100% clear with a really nice timelines. When I had a minor complication in the middle of procedure, Gillian A. was able to check me very quickly and make sure I know what to do. After all the dental work done, my problems with my teeth disappeared, and I am extremely happy with their work. However, I need to deduct practice one star for how they work with financing deal. I love those 0% APR deals for services like this. I think they are extremely useful for a lot of people, who can't afford similar services in a lump-sum payment, so I wanted to give it a try. So, thumbs up for offering those. The price and how the deal works was well explained in the advance, but after a couple of months, when I got my extra appointments due to aforementioned complications, there seems to be a confusion between front-desk staff what's already paid and what not. Don't get me wrong, I was not overpaying (I just covered an costs of two extra aforementioned appointments, both were within 10% of an original estimation), but the confusion around this was visible. It is obvious, that staff is used to letting people know how much they pay, and then charging the right amount. Fact, you can have financing system in place, which can be easily thrown off by an extra appointment needed, seems to be caused by the IT system they are using. Reception desk staff were extremely friendly and helpful, both over the phone and in person, they were just not able to get right information from their system every time, even when they tried. I have to deduct one star, because I personally witnessed two other people struggling with the same issue. In one case a person thought they already paid while admin staff saw in they system they didn't; in other case it was other way around, which seems to cause some good laughter. Person was sure they didn't paid, while the staff thought it was covered; I haven't listened to whole conversation, so I don't know the result. So, I deem this was (is?) a systematic issue with technology rather than a coincidence. So, just double-check your bills and you will be fine. So, overall, extremely friendly and professional service on all fronts, top dentist service, and definitely worth every penny I paid them. But it seems their IT system was letting otherwise amazing practice down in year 2023.

Fantastic experience: I attended for an implant on a failed crown, after many & dare I say enjoyable consultation Dr Hadadi managed to save and replace my crown. The time spent on one to one with the patient is outstanding, I was around a year from start to finish including surgery. The attention to detail and equipment available is second to none. Positive experience: A bit of a waiting time of 10-15 min. Never explained to me why and for how long it will last and nothing offered in terms of courtesy (a glass of water). Apart from that environment is warm and the practice nice. Regarding the appointment itself, my dentist's referral didn't include all the details so the picture was not full for the specialist, but that is not to blame the practice. For a 30 min chat with just basic checking it was a bit overpriced but as i mentioned above it is a combination of what my dentist provided and the pricing of practices itself in UK. At the end of my appointment i had a clear view of what can be done and the nurse offered me a complimentary product of £3 which was a nice gesture.
