The Dental Wave

Negative experience: Seems a bit dodgy I was previously there some years ago for treatment, an extraction they couldn't do due to the complexity, but still charged me for anyway, I was reluctant to return due to the high-pressure sales techniques they used during that appointment, but other dentists weren't open for new patients. My return to the place recently was even worse: I can't complain too much about the costs, because everywhere is overcharging these days, but I can complain about the monthly subscription service with discount off treatments if I pay a regular fee. After signing up, I was told the discount applied only on treatments booked over a month after the first payment cleared, with a six week wait after that for an appointment date, and on my departure was told that if I cancelled the subscription I would be retroactively charged full price on treatments done within a month of the last payment. They also claimed it came with two free hygienist visits, both of which they charged me in full for after the fact, including deducting the money from a payment plan set up for a larger cost treatment I needed. They claimed afterward that the appointments were 'longer than usual' as though that was anyone's choice but theirs, and as though the second appointment wasn't over in twenty minutes. The hygienist was also pretty keen on refusing any anaesthetic while scraping my gums away from my teeth roots with a small metal chisel for the entire duration. After I notified them that I had moved and that the appointment for this filling, a pre-emptive measure for a tiny cavity they claimed would get worse if left, would be my last there, they started drilling into my tooth, then changed their mind, advised me that some other work was more urgent, but that they weren't booked in for that today, and just left the tooth with a hole through the middle, charged me in full for a filling they hadn't done, and sent me away. Unsurprisingly that tooth snapped in half later that same week. The real concern, though, is that, as well as the dodgy subscription model and billing me for services advertised as free, every time I went in, and twice when they called me at home, they apparently had slightly undercharged me for some service or other, and needed me to pay a little extra. Not sure if the receptionists were just bad at their jobs, or good enough at their jobs to find a way to make a little extra under the table, I don't expect the audit will get back to me with their results once their investigation is over.

Fantastic experience: First visit today, and wow, very professional and really friendly staff from the Reception team to the Dental Nurse and Dentist. They make you feel welcomed and at ease if your like myself and are not a fan of the dentist they very supportive and explain everything in detail. If your looking for a dentist I would definitely recommend.

Positive experience: Over all good experience with them historically. Really frustrating their policy has changed you have to have seen the dentist before you book in a hygienist appointment meaning they dont allow you to book a dentist appointment then a hygienist back to back ( if you haven't seen a dentist in the last 12 months). At the time of the call I had seen their dentist 13 months ago. So I would have to make 2 separate vists, one to see the dentist and them come back another time to see the hygienist. This policy change and lack of flexability meant they lost me as a customer as I highly value convenience and my time.

Fantastic experience: I switched to the Dental Wave from NHS treatment about 8 months ago and the service has been fantastic. I've had two appointments so far with my dental hygienist, Sidney, and she really puts me at ease. Her approach is very friendly and she listens to me with absolutely no judgment, just very informative support and high quality care. My dentist Lloyd is the same, and very kind, calm and professional. As someone who struggled for years with dentist anxiety and experienced inconsistent and even rude and heavy handed NHS dental 'care', the Dental Wave is now my safe place. Definitely recommend!

I was expecting to be told that they can't see me until the following week and cancel the plans I had made for the weekend; however, Antonia had different ideas. Not only was she able to fit me in at such short notice, but she also made a special trip in to the practice as all of her team were fully booked (she was not supposed to be working). For her to make this kind of commitment to one of her patients is incredible and I am forever grateful. I was able to enjoy my weekend away pain free. Having recently visited The Dental Wave, i was impressed the moment I walked through the door. Antonia demonstrated first class customer care, immediately addressing any concerns I had due to previous experiences at other practices and she made me feel at ease. I had the usual routine check up with any first appointment as well as a hygiene treatment and a discussion around reshaping my smile with Invisalign. The Invisalign procedure was explained to me very well and there was no pressure for me to commit to anything, that said, being fully informed of how she can improve my smile, for me it was an easy decision to say yes to. Fantastic experience: Good first appointment. Not made to feel guilty about not having seen a dentist for over 5 years, nor about wanting to take a minimalist approach to treatment. I felt very much in the driving seat of decision-making, even if reliant on the expertise of the dentist and other staff. I got away with just 2 fillings and a hygienist appointment. I have to wait a couple of weeks for the first filling, despite the fact the sharp edge of the broken teeth is snagging my tongue... but this is rather shorter than the eternal wait to see an NHS dentist!! As the business's subsequent reply says, they took pity on me and fitted me in with a different dentist who sorted the problem with the tooth, so now it's just a question of waiting for my tongue to heal. So this is now a six star review!!

Fantastic experience: Had an Initial Consultation regarding Invisalign where Antonia went through the overall health of my teeth using modern technologies. Very interesting to see xrays and photo’s of areas you wont always be able to see in a mirror!! Very professional and friendly, and youre met by a lovely reception team! The membership option is perfect for those who might need a lot of love and care to begin with. I would definitely recommend!

Fantastic experience: I’ve been with the Dental Wave for 7 years now and as well as routine treatment have had a wide variety of other procedures carried out, fillings, crowns, and now an implant. I think they are thoroughly professional bunch as well as being genuinely nice people.. It’s easy to make appointments (and change them) and I’ve never had a problem getting urgent work done. The clinical staff always explain in detail what the options for treatment are (and the prices). The treatments themselves have been carried out well (i.e. I’ve never had a problem afterwards!) and I’ve been kept informed during the procedure what is happening. Does it cost money – of course! But I care for my teeth and I’m willing to spend a bit on them.

Fantastic experience: What can I say, other than I'm grateful to LLoyd and Karina of "The Dental Wave" for the work they did on my teeth yesterday. I went from being a life long "dentophobe" to wanting another appointment to sort out the broken mountain range I call teeth. Very long story short...... A cracked tooth and a broken tooth were sat beside each other and I was experiencing the most incredible pain. I spent the morning visiting the local surgeries, explaining the problem and seeking some assistance (at one surgery I was told they could fit me in....... in October and this was an establishment advertising "emergency service"!!!). Not one of the surgeries was able to help or offer assistance and I was getting desperate. Then I went in "The Dental Wave" and was met with compassion and understanding by the receptionist and the offer of an emergency appointment 36 hours later. At the appointed time, I was met by Lloyd and Karina who were extremely understanding about my phobia and managed to get me to stay in the chair at which point, Lloyd got to work. He explained in layman's terms the work he was proposing to do on my teeth and I surprised myself when I agreed to what was about to happen and he started his work, telling me what was going to happen at each stage and I found that his gentle manner and understanding of how I felt, had a huge affect on me. Lloyd took out 2 teeth which were causing the problem and to be honest, I hardly knew or felt what he was doing and I surprised myself by becoming very calm through it all. I shall be making more appointments for my "mountain range" to be sorted out and numerous missing teeth to be replaced. I can't thank the staff enough for their humanity and understanding, especially Lloyd and Karina (who kept a reassuring hand on my shoulder whilst Lloyd was working). My deepest thanks to you all.

Fantastic experience: I came in as a new patient under an emergency appointment. I cannot speak highly enough of ALL the staff. From the first phone call, through the appointment and the check out. Everyone was PHENOMENAL! Honestly, beyond pleased I found them and will definitely be back for future needs.

Fantastic experience: This dental practice is perfect, as a nervous patient I have been treated, with kindness, professionalism and patience. All the staff I have met & had treatments with in the The Dental Wave practice have been really wonderful, this includes reception/management staff, hygienist and of course the dentists. I would say that if you are not registered with a dental practice it is well worth taking a look and consider signing up for the membership e.g. in mine I have 2 x check ups per year, 2 x hygienist treatments and discounted emergency & general treatment. I would say it is worth every penny.

Fantastic experience: Having to go private because of lack of nhs dentists available had left me feeling very annoyed, that being said, what I experienced today was probably the best service I’d ever experienced from a dental visit. The receptions staff were absolutely wonderful, talkative and actually looked like they enjoyed their job and cared about their patients. My dentist (I forgot her name sorry!) was absolutely wonderful, she was very honest and upfront about the next steps I would need to take, transparent about costs etc, she went through all my xrays and photos with me so I actually understood what the problems were and what had to be done and why. I left feeling very positive and for my first experience of paying private, I was pleasantly surprised and feeling a lot less annoyed for having to pay it would highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: Highly recommend for anyone looking for a dentist in Portsmouth. Friendly, professional and really attentive, especially for anyone anxious with seeing the dentist (including myself!).

Negative experience: About 1.5 years ago I had a check up where the blonde female dentist urged I get multiple fillings totalling £600+. I instead altered my diet slightly and used high fluoride tooth paste for 3 months. Got a second opinion elsewhere and they said teeth are in perfect health. I fully believe she was suggesting major work to my teeth that was not needed at all.

Fantastic experience: After years of abysmal treatment at various other dentists, I decided to try the dental wave as they were the best reviewed for nervous patients. I'm so glad I did. I now rarely feel nervous visiting thanks to all the wonderful staff (especially Betty, who is a diamond). Treatment options are always discussed fully including break down of costs and I've not had any problem getting emergency appointments which is a blessing when you're in pain - Betty even gave up her lunch break to treat an abscess so I believe they truly care about their patients.

Negative experience: I am a nervous patient and did not like my visit here a few weeks ago. I always see Betty for my check up who is lovely but this time she was not avalaible so i was put with another dentist. This has happened other times but last time I was temporarily put with malvina who was great. The reception team were friendly and helpful as always but the new dentist who saw me Dr Salzl was rushing a lot. I felt like I was in there for about 10 seconds yet payed so much money. I had a lot of questions to ask however I think she was eager to collect her next patient as when I walked back to reception she ran behind me to meet another patient, who she greeted in such a friendly way in comparison with me who she practically ignored. Not happy and left feeling bitter about the practice to be honest.

Negative experience: Had such shocking service recently which has now meant after many many years we have left. They were doubling our fee for no apparent reason other than profits perhaps?, refused to do our final check up despite the fact we have paid via practice plan and were actually due in June. They now charge for children over 12 and refuse to see them under the NHS, we only received just over a months notice about fee increases which of course meant they were fully booked and conveniently unable to fit us in. Patient care most definitely not, did put in a complaint to which received a rubbish reply I would avoid this dentist at all costs.

Fantastic experience: After a weekend of severe pain from a broken crown and abscess Antonia was so kind and reassuring and worked out a plan to help immediately. She drained abscess which although sore had an immediate effect of relieving pressure. I am over 70 and did have bit of a turn but they looked after me superbly. Letting me rest in another room, called my daughter and spoke to my GP. All the staff are so lovely. They worked hard all through Lockdown in challenging conditions to look after their patients so I'm not at all surprised to be honest. They are patient, kind and helpful from reception to surgery. Highly recommended.
